Webinar Description
With the widespread legalization of cannabis for both medical and recreational use as well as the generous accommodation of employees under the Americans with Disabilities Act, marijuana legalization has been a huge area of concern for employers. Despite those concerns, marijuana is not the biggest threat to workplace safety, accommodation issues or procedural complexities. Our largest and most looming problem with impairment is the opioid epidemic and other prescribed medication. Why? Because opioids and other medications often are legally prescribed, are easy to obtain, can quickly create serious impairment on the job, are generally protected under the nondiscrimination laws, and cannot be systemically banned from the workplace.
Although many people take prescription medications responsibly, an estimated fifty-four million people (more than twenty percent of those aged twelve and older) admit to having used prescribed medications for “non-medical” reasons. Opioid use alone creates costs of more than five billion dollars per year. Death tolls from misuse of prescription medication accounts for more than fifty thousand deaths per year in the United States, equaling the total number of fatalities caused by all illegal drugs (seventeen thousand), all marijuana-related deaths (zero) and all alcohol-related deaths (thirty-three thousand). So, what as employers can we do to keep our employees and workplaces safe, legal and secure; more important, how do we do it?
