How to Handle Wage Garnishments and Abandoned Wages

Duration: 90 minutes

Speaker: Miles Hutchinson

Webinar Description

The Federal Consumer Credit Protection Act provides workers with protections concerning garnishment of their wages by creditors. State law also affects an employer’s obligations regarding garnishments, and state laws often are inconsistent. Furthermore, is an employer required to comply with a state garnishment law or with the federal law? What must an employer do when it is served with a garnishment order? What about the employee who is the subject of more than one order? How much will an employer have to withhold from a worker’s wages to honor an order? Join us for a 90 minute discussion of the rules for handling these difficult and sensitive issues. Be sure your employees receive the fair treatment they deserve under the law while you also protect your company from liability.

The webinar will also cover the subject of what an employer should do when an employee or, more usually, a former employee, does not cash his or her pay check. Learn about state law requirements regarding abandoned wages, including when and how to turn over these unclaimed wages to the state.

Miles Hutchinson, experienced payroll law expert and CPA, will discuss the basic legal requirements and payroll procedures necessary to comply with federal and state law relating to wage garnishments and abandoned wages. He will provide simple charts and tables to help you determine the steps to full compliance. You will be given practical instructions and guidance for determining the proper garnishment priorities and withholding limits and effective procedures to help you avoid potential penalties for non-compliance with garnishment and abandoned property laws.
