HIPAA and the HITECH Act: Round 2 Audits

Duration: 90 minutes

Speaker: Nathan Kottkamp

Webinar Description

The requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (the HITECH Act) will soon be enforced through random audits directed by the Office for Civil Rights (OCR). OCR intended to start the second round of audits in 2016, but delayed the initiation of such audits until 2017. The audits will be comprehensive and will assess compliance with the Security Rule, the Privacy Rule, and the Breach Notification Rule.  Covered Entities and Business Associates should be prepared for increased enforcement of HIPAA and the HITECH Act through the HITECH Act Audit Program and investigations. This webinar will address what to expect with the HITECH Act Audits and how to prepare for them. This webinar will also identify key areas where Covered Entities and Business Associates may be at risk of noncompliance with HIPAA and the HITECH Act.

Nathan Kottkamp, an attorney at the law firm of McGuireWoods LLP, will provide an overview on HIPAA and the HITECH Act and discuss the key items that should be considered for HIPAA and HITECH Act compliance in 2017 and preparing for a HITECH Act audit.
