Webinar Description
According to the Department of Labor’s employment outlook, 1 out of 4 workers are projected to be over age 55 by the year 2020, a striking demographic shift in the labor force. According to a 2017 US Senate Special Committee on Aging, the number of older workers is growing at a rate that outpaces the overall growth of the labor force. Increases in longevity combined with decreases in retirement savings have caused employees to stay in the workplace longer than previous generations did. This trend is expected to continue and is for the most part good news as employers struggle to find qualified employees.
There are many advantages to older workers. A SHRM survey of 2500 Human Resources professionals identified the top perceived advantages of older workers as: more work experience; knowledge and skills; maturity and professionalism; a stronger work ethic; being more reliable and loyal; and experiencing less turnover.
However, older workers just as does any age group of workers don’t just represent an age bracket. They represent a state of mind. Now they find themselves older, still working and facing very real concerns such as their own health and shoring up their retirement savings while working at an age at which their own parents had retired. This is previously uncharted new territory being navigated both by employees and employers.
